I am NOT a chef, a knife maker or a swordsman. I’m just a guy that needs to sharpen my kitchen knives every so often. This sharpener does just that and does it pretty well. Purists will scream with horror at the thought of using something less sophisticated than a 3 whet stone set-up but they would be more traumatized by the condition of my everyday kitchen knives.The sharpener I received has 3 slots for sharpening knives and one for scissors. The slot for a dull knife is steel on steel and is probably too aggressive for regular use but prepares a knife for more refined sharpening using the other slots. The center slots are for fine grinding and use two ceramic rods in a V configuration. I can’t see a significant difference between them but assume they have differing set angles for various desired edges. I end up using just one and get decent results. The scissor slot seems to work well enough but it may not be suitable for specialized scissors for quilting or barber shears.The instructions say to hold the sharpener with your left hand and to pull the knife through the sharpening groove with your right hand. Do not use a push-pull motion. I use slight pressure on the blade and need only about 10 strokes to improve the sharpness of my knives. The design includes a rubberized handle and base to prevent slipping. There is no blade guard so use the sharpener cautiously and supervise any children or others that may become careless while sharpening.This sharpener is probably not the best for professional use or for people with the tools and patience to sharpen blades by hand. It is very suitable for a home cook looking to improve their knives’ cutting ability. Occasional use will help to sharpen blades and regular use of a honing steel will keep them in decent condition. People with specialty blades or high dollar knives may not appreciate this sharpener. But for me… it works pretty well.
