Volts snap to life right away when power is applied , volts displays current hours with engine off, it only logs time with engine running , to connect wires to it — you need Molex 8-Pin Black Connector Pitch 4.20mm.0165″ w/18-24 AWG Pin Mini-Fit Jr this can be found on Amazon , test your connections before connecting because pos and neg are not marked , trial and error will help you find the correct terminals and I don’t think backwards wiring will hurt it, it just won’t work until wired correctly , but dropping it it on the cement will ruin it, hang on to it , and yes it is backlit with a calm white backlight – a very nice gauge indeed
